Amy Martin is presenting "The Origins of Irish Internationalism: Violence and Terror in Nineteenth Century Ireland and India." She will explore Irish writings of the Sepoy rebellion in India and the Morant Bay rebellion in Jamaica. Martin's lecture is drawn from her current book project: a study of internationalism central to Irish nationalism in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Ireland in 1913 was a country in turmoil, divided by the issue of Home Rule. However, against this backdrop of this nationalist fervor, a bitter industrial conflict took center stage. The Dublin Lock-Out, which lasted for five long months, ended in ruinous capitulation for the working classes and the exile of trade union leader Jim Larkin to the United States.

This lecture by Fulbright FLTA, Síobhra Aiken, will aim to evoke the voices of the defeated workers and consider what lessons their legacy can offer us today. We will also assess the significance of this important, yet traumatic, event within the course of Irish history. How significant was the Lock-Out in the lead up to the Easter Rising in 1916?

We invite you to a special meeting with Mr. Felix Molski of New South Wales, Australia. Mr. Molski is the author of "The Best of Human Nature," a biography of Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki, and co-producer of a film documenting Strzelecki's humanitarian efforts during the Irish Great Famine of the 19th century.

Mr. Molski notes that Count Strzelecki is quoted as saying, "If the Devil himself exercised all his ingenuity to invent a scheme which should destroy the country, he could not have contrived anything more effectual than the principles and practices upon which landed property has been held and managed in Ireland." Minister Jimmy Deenihan, Irish Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, asserts that Count Strzelecki was instrumental in saving over 200,000 Irish children from starvation.

Born in Derry City, Northern Ireland, Leo Doherty is an accomplished singer who came to the United States in 1957. He grew up in a very musical family and as a young man he began his career in show business as the front man/star of the famous Johnny Quigley Show Band based in Derry. When he immigrated to America, he took his beautiful voice and showmanship with him and became the lead singer with the popular Springfield-based Shamrocks of Kerry band. To this day Leo enjoys performing and his love and pride of his native country shines through in every note he sings. For many years Leo Doherty has delighted audiences far and wide and his delivery of Irish and American classics is second to none. Often compared to the famous American crooners Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, he sings every song from his heart and when you leave a Leo Doherty performance you are sure to feel happy, entertained, and wanting more. Paul Grzebieniowski is an amazingly talented musician/accordionist who can play just about anything you may request.

As well as formal classes, Lá na Gaeilge consists of workshops (céilí dancing, film), and cómhrás (opportunities for conversation and dialog at the learner’s appropriate level). A lecture, "Beyond the Wild Atlantic Way: West Kerry Oral Tradition" will be given by Seaghan Mac an tSionnaigh, Notre Dame FLTA. Lá na Gaeilge concludes in a seisiún with an opportunity for participants to display their musical talents. Registration begins at 8:30 am and the day concludes at about 5:00 pm.
